Babies arrive on their own timetable, but moms can prepare by pre-registering on-line four to six weeks before their due date. Click here for Easy Check-In.
Keep the suitcase by the door in those final weeks and make sure it contains the following: comb, brush, mouthwash, toothbrush and toothpaste, slippers, robe, lotion and two pairs of socks. Moms in labor find those handy items to have, along with a camera, extra batteries, film, tape player or CD player for relaxing music, some snacks and a sweater for your support person. For additional touches of home, bring your own gown or pajamas and personal care items.
Be sure and pack something roomy for you to wear when you leave the hospital, since it takes time to get back to your pre-pregnancy shape. And you will want a special outfit for baby's first photo and the trip home. Don't forget to bring the car seat. Your baby must be properly restrained in an age appropriate car seat.
Most insurance plans are welcome at Baptist Regional Medical Center, but there are some restrictions. Check with your insurance company as soon as you know you are pregnant to learn about coverage for charges from the hospital, obstetrician, anesthesiologist (if needed), and pediatrician or family practice physician to care for the new baby. Also check with your insurance carrier about:
- precertification
- allowed length of stay
- home health visits
If you do not have health insurance, call the financial counselor at 606-528-1212 to discuss deposits and payment plans.
When baby begins to announce his or her arrival, proceed at safe speeds to Baptist Regional Medical Center and go directly to the emergency entrance and tenderly deposit mom at the front door. If you call prior to your arrival, mom can be met at the door with a wheelchair. Check in at the Emergency Room Admissions desk and they will direct you to your destination. Park in the adjacent lot to the Emergency Department. There is no charge for parking.
Baptist Regional Medical Center has spacious and comfortable Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms, a well baby nursery, plus a Level II nursery (with pediatricians on call 24 hours a day).
Babies may stay in the room with mom, or can be lovingly cared for in the nursery by our experienced staff. Each private room also has sleeping accommodations for your primary support person to spend the night.
At BRMC, women receive support from our experienced, specially trained staff who see to their comfort during their birthing experience. Moms may elect to deliver without medication, or choose from a variety of pain-relief options available for labor and delivery. You may wish to discuss these options with your obstetrician well in advance of the big day. Once you are in your room, you will be assigned your own nurse, specially trained to care for new moms.
The arrival of a new baby is always a special event. Excitement and anticipation abound as you welcome your new baby into the world. At Baptist Regional Medical Center, we share in your excitement and realize that the birth of a baby is a cause for celebration for you and your family. We are proud to assist in the delivery of babies from all over the region and to share in the joy of welcoming each new life. To help share in the celebration of a new birth, the hospital plays "Brahms Lullaby" over the intercom whenever a new baby is born. Parents receive a tray of cookies at that time.
All nurses are trained to help breastfeeding mothers take the frustration out of those first few meals. If needed, lactation consultants are also available to provide breastfeeding tips for successful nursing.
In addition, guidance is given to moms who decide to bottlefeed their new babies. Your pediatrician will recommend a formula for your baby.
Bring the camera, videocamera and plenty of film to capture those first few moments after baby's birth. Once the baby is born, and your physician says everything is ok, you may photograph or videotape. Photography or videotaping of medical procedures including the actual birth is not allowed. After a C-section, only still photography is allowed.
Upon admission, you will be asked to select one primary support person. Your support person will be encouraged to remain with you throughout your labor and delivery. In addition to your support person, you may have two other persons visit you at any time. Big brothers and sisters are allowed in the LDR, if supervised at all times by an adult other than the patient or support person. The visitors may take turns coming into the LDR, trading places with those in the Family Waiting Room provided on the floor.
Visitors may be asked to leave the LDR if complications are anticipated or develop.
Once the baby is born, other visitors may be allowed in the LDR, with your permission. They can even hold the baby after washing their hands thoroughly.
If a Caesarean-section is required, your support person may attend the procedure if approved by your obstetrician. Your support person can remain with you in the recovery room.
Patients have the freedom to limit their visitors or request privacy at any time.
Unless you have requested no visitors, your other children and their grandparents can visit you and your new baby on the Mother/Baby unit at any time. All other visitors to either the LDR's or the Mother/Baby Unit must be age 12 or older. Visiting hours are 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Fathers, siblings and grandparents are not considered visitors and may be with you and the baby whenever possible.
BRMC staff will assist you in filling out the necessary paperwork to receive a birth certificate and Social Security number for the new baby.
If the mother and father are not married to each other, they can complete a voluntary paternity form. The father's name will be listed on the birth certificate and he will be established as the legal father. This may entitle the child to benefits such as insurance, Social Security and veternan's benefits. The form should be completed before you leave the hospital. When it comes time to go home, mom and the new baby will get a wheelchair ride to the discharge exit. Don't forget a "going home" outfit for the baby and the age appropriate car seat to take baby home.
