Diffusion Studies

Diffusion studies show how fast or slow the oxygen moves from the lungs into the bloodstream where the body can use it.  These studies can help diagnose interstitial lung disease and emphysema.

Instructions to the Patient
If you are using Servent or Advair, please DO NOT use your inhaler for 16 hours prior to your scheduled PFT appointment.  All other inhaler medications should not be used 4 hours prior to testing time.  Do not smoke for a least 2 hours prior to testing.  There is no preparation for PFT's, but it is best that you be relaxed.  Wear loose fitting clothing and avoid belts or girdles that may make it harder for you to breath.

Additional Information
Following the test a computer will generate a printout and graph of your test results.  Your physician or a Pulmonologist will interpret the results.  There are usually no after effects from PFT's.  However, some patients feel a little tired when they finish.  When the tests are over, you can resume your normal activities.
