Holter Monitoring is a continuous recording of your heart's electrical activity for 24 hours while you go about your normal activities. It is very useful in diagnosing abnormal heart rhythms and in determining whether recurring symptoms such as dizziness, fainting and palpitations are caused by abnormal rhythms.
Instructions to the Patient Take a bath or shower before the test. You will wear the monitor for 24 hours and will be unable to bathe. A technician will place several patches on your chest and attach to wires and the holter device, so wear a two-piece outfit of loose clothing. Note: If a patch (electrode) comes off, reattach it with a piece of tape onto the skin. Follow your daily activities and record any symptoms that may develop during the day, such as dizziness, palpitations, chest pain, or shortness of breath.
Additional Information 24 Hours later, the monitor will be removed. If you are in the hospital; someone will come and take it off. If you are an outpatient, you must return tot he hospital and have it removed. Afterwards you can resume normal activities. All Holter Monitors are scanned by a Credentialed Respiratory Therapist and will be over read by a Cardiologist.
