Three Great Symbols of Christmas

Storefronts always reveal the time of the year.  A November stroll down Main Street of almost any city will be filled with a warm greeting that reads “Happy Thanksgiving.” Not long ago, any outing during late November or December would be replete with messages of  “Merry Christmas.” Unfortunately, this is not so anymore. “Merry Christmas” has been replaced with “Happy Holidays,” and “Season’s Greetings.” What is missing? Apparently, it is the name of Christ.

The true Christmas——The  celebration of  Jesus’ birth——seems to be diminishing.  “Christmas” is being replaced with a separate and unrelated event: the “Holidays.”

As we participate in family gatherings and celebrations, it is easy to inadvertently allow the time you spend with God to dwindle. Although it is fun to revel in the festivities of the season, it is more important to reflect on the birth of Christ and examine our walk with God.

Luke Chapter two tells us the Shepherds were excited about the birth of Jesus as they were watching their sheep and the Angel of the Lord came upon them. We Christians ought to be excited because Christmas is the most phenomenal opportunity that we have all year to tell someone about Jesus. During Christmas, the world takes notice of the birth of the Savior, even if they do not realize it.

There are three great symbols of Christmas. The cradle, the cross, and the crown. The cradle (manger) was the beginning, but the cradle led to the cross and the crown. The cross would not be the end, the cross would be to die for the sins of the world but that would only lead to the resurrection and ultimately to the crown.
